science of nutrition and the body's metabolic needs.
The Role of Trace Elements
Essential Trace elements are minerals that are needed in minute, but significant quantities as co-factors for some of the critical chemical reactions that occur during metabolism. If they are deficient, necessary functions are compromised and the result is any number of disease states. One of the better known is cobalt, found in cyanocobalamine, which itself is better known as vitamin B12. A deficiency of this element causes pernicious anemia.
Chromium
Another less well-known element is chromium. This is an essential trace3 element needed for the metabolism of sugars and fat, is indispensable in the action of insulin, and which is widely deficient in the American diet.
Tissue levels of chromium are also decreased by diets high in simple sugars, by pregnancy, by advancing age, by strenuous physical activity, and by a number of other conditions that place stress on the body and effect the overall state of health.
There is ample evidence that, while it has been refined out of our diet, it plays a crucial role in the action of insulin, which regulates the metabolism of both glucose and fat. It has been shown in controlled trials that it is crucial to enzymatic pathways that allow the body fat stores to be utilized as an energy source while sparing the body's lean muscle mass.
It is this "protein-sparing" effect that is lacking from most commercial and proprietary diet plans.
Low tissue chromium levels are also associated with high blood cholesterol levels, in addition to the insulin imbalance it causes.
A Widespread Deficiency
The U. S. Government reports that nine out of ten Americans consume less than the minimum daily dietary requirement of chromium as established by the National Research Council.
For these reasons, we have made chromium supplements an integral part of your diet plan at the Rossville Weight Loss Center, and is supplied to you along with your appetite suppressant medication.
While elemental chromium is a hazardous waste, there are two forms of chromium that are available through the diet. One of these is Chromium Piccolinate, and this is the one that we use.
This has been shown to significantly enhance the loss of fat mass while preserving lean body mass when used in conjunction with diet modification and exercise program.
It is supplied to our patients along with the appetite suppressant medication.
