Our Program: Diet Modification Program
A rational Diet Plan Dietary Modification Program
That A Person Can Live With
Targeting Fat
Since it is obvious that fat is the culprit of many of our dietary woes,
this will be the main target of our diet modification.
On the other hand, it is well known that the body needs fat as part of
its nutritional requirements.
We recommend that the calories from dietary fat should be
no more than 10% of the total calorie intake. In order to reach this goal,
it is only necessary to be aware of what we are eating, and how it is
prepared. Simple educated choices in our daily diet will drastically cut
the amount of fat that we consume.
Fat is the major culprit for the epidemic proportions of obesity that
are seen in the United States and other western countries. It is undoubtedly
at fault for the epidemic proportions of a number of cancers that are
prevalent in Western culture, including cancers of the Breast, Colon,
and Prostate.
One has only to look at the rates of these cancers in Eastern countries,
such as Japan, to see that they are a fraction of what they are in this
country and in other countries with a Western diet.
Diet Differences
The differences in these rates of cancer are explained by the differences
in the diets of these populations.
The classic eastern diet is characterized by a low-fat, high fiber content.
Fish and poultry supply the non-vegetable protein in the eastern diet.
By contrast, the western diet consists of red meat, often quite high in
fat content. Add to this the cream sauces, cheese, and deep-fried foods,
our "fast-food" addiction, and the differences become dramatic
and stark.
For example, it is almost impossible to find an item on the typical "Fast
Food Menu" that contains less than 50% fat calories!! Eliminating
these items from one's diet will go a long way towards reaching the goal.
Do the math...
One ounce of potato chips...about 20 chips...has about 150 calories,
half of which are from fat, and most of that is saturated fat. The same
size serving of pretzels contains NO fat. Do the math, and the choice
of a quick snack becomes a simple choice.
Complex Carbohydrates
The primary energy
source of the body is glucose, a simple sugar. This compound is so important
that, if it is not present in the diet, the body will make it from other
nutrients.
If several molecules
are joined together, the result is a carbohydrate, or a simple starch.
Pasta and other simple starches are chains of glucose molecules joined
together.
However, in order
to get these glucose molecules for use in the body, the process of digestion
must occur...the body must expend energy to get its basic building blocks.
Avoiding simple sugars,
and eating complex carbohydrates, as are found in fresh fruits and vegetables,
will make the body expend energy to get what it needs. And the only way
it can expend energy is by burning calories.
We will give you the
tools to help the body to burn the right calories by choosing and eating
the right foods.
