William J. Roe, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Roe

Dr. Roe is a board-certified general and vascular surgeon who has been in practice in Baltimore since 1983. Born in New Jersey, Dr. Roe received his M.D. degree from New York Medical College in 1978, following which he completed his training in surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He is certified by theAmerican Board of Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of various specialty societies, including the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

Coming to Baltimore in 1983, he was named Chief of Surgery of Wyman Park Medical Center, the former Public Health Hospital, a position he held until he entered private practice in 1994.

He has long had an interest in the nutritional aspects of health and disease. This interest has persisted and grown throughout his career as a practicing surgeon, and which evolved into the Rossville Weight Loss Center.

Originally limited to medical weight loss, it was soon apparent that the morbidly obese patient would not respond to simple measures. As a result, surgical treatment was added to the menu, and Baltimore Bariatrics was born.

Dr. Roe started performing the Roux-Y Gastric Bypass in 2001. To date he has performed over 570 procedures, which is one of the largest series by a single surgeon in the Baltimore metropolitan area.

As a group, his patients have lost an excess of 60,000 pounds, with an average weight loss of 105 pounds per patient. Individual weight loss varies according to the pre-operative weight and compliance with the post-operative regimen, with some patients losing in excess of 250 pounds.

Using a unique minimally invasive open technique, he is able to limit operating time to under one hour, and patients are typically discharged on the second post-operative day. Recovery time is in every way comparable to the laparoscopic approach, yet with only a fraction of the time under anesthesia for the patient.

You can view a video of his technique, prepared by Ethicon EndoSurgery, by following the link found on the Home Page of this site.

He is proud to perform his Gastric Bypass surgery at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, 6701 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21204.

Great Baltimore Medical Center is one of the few hospitals in the region that has been designated a "Center of Excellence" by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.
